We are so proud to present The Old School Bed and Breakfast in Little Compton.
Built in 1854 by Mr Hinchman, a local brewery owner and Victorian philanthropist. Once a thriving village school that closed in 1996, it became a day nursery until 2007 when John and Wendy purchased this iconic building …. and so their exciting new adventure began.
The Old School B & B is an award-winning ‘home-from-home’. It is welcoming and friendly with some fascinating school-day nostalgia within its old walls – for example, quirky door handles, classroom doors and exit signs – but, thankfully, very few school rules!
Set amidst the glorious north Cotswolds in England’s largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this home is a haven for you to relax, refresh and revive, ready for another day discovering unspoilt sleepy villages, soaking up the atmosphere of honey-coloured bustling market towns or staring in awe at the wonderful buildings and fascinating sights in historic Oxford, Cirencester, Warwick or Shakespeare’s home town, Stratford-upon-Avon.
Your hosts Wendy and John are passionate about their home and your stay in the beautiful Cotswolds. Very little ‘homework’ will be required, as Wendy will have provided most of the answers to your questions – and, of course, the ‘headmistress’s’ office is always open for a chat once you are here!

Old School Rooms
Old School Rooms
The Old School Dining Hall and an upstairs vaulted-ceiling Sitting Room are enjoyed by our Guests as well as our four very comfortable ensuite bedrooms (see photos and descriptions, below).
Named after neighbouring village schools, all four bedrooms have super-king size double beds (6ft wide by 6ft 6in long / 180cm x 200cm) made up with Egyptian 900TC cotton sheets, hypo-allergenic duvets and pillows. Blankets are available on request.
In all our ensuite bedrooms ..
…there is an under-counter refrigerator to keep your freshly supplied milk and locally sourced bottled water chilled – essential too, if you fancy bringing your own bubbly or spirits! We can provide extra ice and a slice, and appropriate glasses. Our guests have a kettle and a choice of premium-quality coffee and tea with decaffeinated options and assorted herbal and fruit teas, plus biscuits to nibble on.
Our bedrooms are also supplied with a small flat TV with radio – bedside alarm clock – hairdryer – hand torch / flashlight – hot water bottles – spare blankets – cooling / warm-air fans – luggage rack – glass tumblers – bottle opener – laundry bags – shoe horn – USB socket – emergency torch / night light, compliant smoke detector – fire action plan for each room – and a fire extinguisher.
Pamper yourself in your en-suite bathroom with our gorgeous, gentle-on-the skin toiletries – fluffy towelling dressing gowns – and complimentary slippers. Wrap yourself in our super-soft bath sheets, large enough to hide your modesty! All provided by the Old School B& B to make your stay very comfortable indeed.
We also offer complimentary use of a washing machine, dryer and ironing board for guests staying two nights or more.
You are also provided with your own labelled key fob and keys for access into the house and your bedroom, and these are yours for the duration of your stay. If lost, or not handed back on departure or within a reasonable timescale, you will be asked to pay £50 to cover our replacement cost.
For 2018 our room rate is £135.00 including VAT.
This price is per room, per night, double or twin occupancy and includes a full English breakfast with plenty of choices, and afternoon tea and home-made cake upon your day of arrival.
For stays over a weekend we ask for a minimum two-night booking which can fall either side to include the Saturday night.
And over the Christmas and New Year week and all Bank Holidays, we ask for a minimum three-night stay. But please always check with us as we might have a natural gap which works for your dates.
Our single occupancy rate is £120.00 including VAT
Subject to availability, one bedroom only can accommodate an additional single bed. Triple occupancy rate is £160 including VAT.
To confirm your reservation, a non-refundable deposit of £40 per room, per night is required upon booking. Once payment has been cleared and a confirmation email has been sent to you, your booking has been secured.

The Old School is perfect for many different kinds of reunion or gathering, taking over all four bedrooms for 2-3 nights to celebrate a big birthday, a family get-together, or just time out with special friends. For these occasions we offer a package that makes for a very relaxing and memorable time.
Group booking based on 8 adults (3 doubles plus 1 double or twin) for 2 nights minimum, to include a complimentary afternoon tea and home-made cake each day; pre-dinner nibbles: 3-course dinner, followed by coffee, after-dinner chocolates and some little Old School extras!
Your package includes a selection of soft drinks, always ice + slice with mixers and we set up a small table for you to use as a ‘bar area’ and provide bowls for bought-in nibbles i.e. crisps, nuts etc.
If you request table settings, decorations, balloons etc these can be supplied at an additional charge.
Menus for house parties are based on availability and my stock of seasonal and locally procured favourites – but I’m always happy to include a favourite request.

Sitting Room and Dining/Living Room
- Guests are welcome to use the sitting room and dining/living room at any time.
- Spot lights, lamps and dimmer switches offer good but flexible lighting as well as plenty of natural daylight.
- The carpeted living/dining room has 3 settees, coffee tables and a large dining table where all meals are served. There are two emergency exits in this room leading out to the front of the house.
- The carpeted sitting room is on the first floor and has a wood-burning stove. There are 2 settees and a coffee table, assorted books and board games in the first area. A step leads down to 3 settees, a large coffee table, a round table and reading material etc.
- A fire escape via the sitting room velux window leads out onto a flat roof and metal fire escape ladder to the side of the house.
- The hall leads out to the guest entrance/exit door and a small utility room which has a sink and water, washing machine, tumble dryer and facilities for hanging, cleaning / drying wet or muddy clothes. First aid kits and a shoe-cleaning box are also located there.
- The hall leads to a carpeted cloakroom with 2 steps down to the WC. There are no handrails, hoists or baby changing facilities.
- The hall has a small open fireplace, currently not in use.
- The hall leads to the ground floor bedroom ‘Reed’.
- The hall leads to the carpeted living/dining room via a narrow school corridor. There is a step up into the dining room.
- The owners’ private facilities are off the hallway through the kitchen.
- There are three further bedrooms upstairs (please see Bedrooms section)
- The hall has polished wooden flooring.
- The house is centrally heated throughout with the thermostat positioned in the hall. Temperatures can be adjusted within each room at the point of the radiator to suit individual needs.
- A carpeted stairway (12 steps) without a handrail leads from the hall up to a landing area with wooden flooring and a large rug. Here is a desk, writing material and drawers containing local maps and tourist information.
- ‘Kingham’ bedroom is on this landing, with one step down into the room.
- Two steps lead up to a landing corridor to the sitting room and one guest bedroom ‘Dormer’ and also to a public cloakroom. A small staircase – 7 steps – leads to the top bedroom door ‘Kitebrook’ with a further 7 steps to the bedroom.
- All public rooms and bedrooms have fire rated doors – the bedrooms and sitting room being self-closing.
- Ceiling mounted audible smoke detectors are installed throughout the house in all rooms and public areas.
A gravel parking area leads to formal and informal gardens with seating areas and umbrellas. Please ask for additional chairs, rugs etc. Beyond the formal garden an archway leads to a paved area with a raised pond, further garden tables and benches. This leads into an orchard / wild garden planted with fruit trees, home to hens, bantams, ducks and rabbits. There is also deep man-made duck pond and a composting area.
Children are not allowed into this area and signs clearly state ‘No unauthorised entry’ unless I have agreed and adults are in control of children.
An area of garden is suitable for croquet, games and also the erection of a small marquee if required for special occasions.
Once the school toilets, brick sheds and storage offer housing for bicycles and other equipment if required, please ask before arrival, if you need anything locking up securely. Our animal feed-store and general tool shed are also located here and kept padlocked.
The front garden is reached via a bolted gate and we do ask guests not to use this area as gates are bolted for security.

Accidents happen! Please just let us know so that we can deal with it promptly and minimise the damage.
Bedding: All our bedding, toppers, duvets and pillows are hypo-allergenic.
Dressing gowns are available in your room.
Food: So that other guests can enjoy our high standards, any cold snacks / light bites brought into The Old School need to be eaten in the Dining Hall or outdoors only. Please ask us for plates and napkins.
Keys: We will provide you with a set of keys so that you can come and go as you please. Lost keys, or keys not returned, will incur a £50 charge.
Laundry: We provide complimentary use of a Utility Room for those staying two nights or more. Please, respectfully, do not drip-dry clothes in your bedroom as this will ensure that our home will stay free from damp and mildew.
Room cleaning: We carry out our housekeeping and room cleaning between 9.30am and 12 noon each day and will require access to your room during this time. If you are planning on being out during these hours, please let us know when we can have access.
Teas and coffees are provided in your room. Please let us know if you have run out of anything. If you need dairy-free milk, please advise us ahead of your visit. Thank you.
Torches are provided in your room. Please ensure they are returned for the next guests’ use.
Umbrellas are available in the utility room.
Wet clothing: We would appreciate it if guests could please leave outdoor wet clothing and muddy shoes and boots in the Utility Room. Please make us aware so that we can help you to deal with them.
The Old School Bed and Breakfast is in Little Compton in the Cotswolds, off the A44 between Moreton-in-Marsh and Chipping Norton. When you are planning your trip please bear in mind that it is vital to have a car to explore the area as public transport is very limited.

TRAVELLING BY CAR
Leaving Moreton-in-Marsh, take the A44 to Oxford/ Chipping Norton. Travel for approx. 3.5 miles. Don’t turn off the main road when you see the signs for Little Compton, stay on the main road and take the next turning right, signed Chastleton Village, and turn immediately left into our double-gated driveway into the parking area.
Leaving Chipping Norton, take the A44 to Evesham /Moreton in Marsh. Travel for approximately 4 miles. As you enter the village of Little Compton, stay on the main road and take the next turning left, signed to Chastleton Village, and go immediately left into our double-gated driveway Into the parking area.
Whichever way you arrive, the gigantic Monkey Puzzle Tree in our front garden is a useful and well-known landmark!

TRAVELLING BY TRAIN
We are about 6 miles from Kingham Station and 4 miles from Moreton-in-Marsh Station, which are both on the Great Western London-Paddington Hereford line.
The train takes about 1 hour 35 minutes from Paddington to Moreton-in-Marsh (and about 10 minutes less to Kingham).

TAXIS FROM THE STATION
Please note that you will need to book a taxi to meet you from the train at either Kingham or Moreton- in-Marsh as there are no taxi ranks at these stations. They need to be booked ahead as they do get busy. Few take credit or debit cards so you will need cash. They normally charge about £1 per mile.

The Old School was built in 1854 servicing Little Compton and surrounding villages. Now converted to our home and B&B, whilst we aim to meet the needs of all our guests, there are still some period features typical of a Victorian school that might make access difficult for people with limited mobility. Please ask if you have any specific needs and we will do all we can to help. We are sorry that The Old School is not suitable for families with babies, children under 12 (unless the whole house is booked by the one group/family) or wheelchair users. Regrettably too, we cannot accommodate pets.
