The Howard Arms

Country Idyll loves a hidden gem, and we love the Howard Arms, peacefully hidden in the fold of the Cotswold hills, The Howard Arms, Ilmington, lies just 8 miles south of Stratford-upon-Avon. Built about the same time as Shakespeare wrote King Lear, little has changed since. A lovely country inn with original fixtures and fittings, flagstones, heavy beams, mellow stone walls and a huge crackling fire. Roses ramble outside, and in summer the pretty garden is open for eating.

Top Notch Food

With 8 beautiful bedrooms and top-notch food, the character and heart of The Howard Arms lies in the fact it is an authentic Cotswold pub loved and frequented by a substantial local community.

On a Friday evening you’d be hard-pushed to find a place at the bar; after the harvest the farmers gather, other local groups meet to chat or play games such as Aunt Sally in the garden. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming; professional but with no sense of pretension.

Large Choice of Local Ales

The bar offers a large choice of local ales, village cider made from nearby orchards, thoughtfully chosen wines and other drinks served by friendly  staff. Dogs are as welcome as their owners and you can choose from the full menu and eat at cosy tables by the fire or in the Snug. Leading off this is an elegant, beautifully lit dining area with wild flowers on the tables and oil paintings on the walls. Fine arched windows overlook the village green with its magnificent chestnut tree.

Local Produce

Renowned for its top quality food, award-winning head chef Gareth creates exciting surprises alongside classic pub favourites such as fish and chips and liver and bacon. Using carefully selected local ingredients whenever possible, everything is freshly prepared and beautifully presented. It is original without being fussy and the portions are generous, Puddings are irresistible.
