The Salutation Inn
Exeter – Devon
Historical Dining Destination in the Heart of Topsham
The Salutation Inn is one of historical Topsham’s oldest residents; a 300-year old establishment bursting with stories. This is the home of unforgettable food and drink and a cloud-soft bed followed by a restorative Devon breakfast the following morning.
You’ll find the grand three-story façade standing proudly in the centre of Topsham; an old port and ship building town at the head of the Exe Estuary. English Heritage describe the vast wooden door as one of the largest single leaf doors in the country, carrying above it the Assembly (Topsham’s best room) and its architecturally unique Venetian window.
Tom and Amelia Williams-Hawkes have manned the helm for the past six years. Tom is the Chef Director, having previously worked alongside Michael Caines, Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing. Amelia runs a slick front of house team; each member extending the Williams-Hawkes family’s warm welcome and professional service.
With a high-reputation for gourmet feasting (winner of ‘Best Fine Dining Restaurant’ in Devon in the Food Drink Devon Awards 2018) their fine-dining restaurant continues to be Exeter’s go-to destination for celebrations and special occasions. Their GlassHouse is the perfect daily escape for coffee, cake and afternoon tea.
Every scrap on the menu is prepared in-house. The menu’s crowning glory is the local fish brought in daily, but there are equally impressive options for meat lovers – such as the Greendale Farm beef fillet, baby carrot, confit onion and Madeira sauce. Vegetarian stand-out dishes include wild mushroom tortellini, hen of the woods and mushroom consommé. Ethically sourcing the produce is top of Tom’s agenda, and from day boat fish to local veg growers, every item is carefully considered.
Legendary Sunday Roasts
Their Sunday roasts are legendary – traditional enough to satisfy when only a roast will do, but with each plate being just as carefully engineered as the a la carte. Be sure to save space for the West Country cheese board too.
At the end of the evening, tumble into one of their sumptuous beds – each fitted with an organic woollen mattress handmade in Topsham. Amelia has selected natural West Country toiletries for the six renovated bedrooms – another small detail to show you’re in good hands.
The Salutation Inn is only four miles from Exeter – why not take the train down the estuary, cycle or paddle your way there and work up an appetite along the way.
